What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a rehabilitation profession that assists people in overcoming limitations
as a result of injury, illness, or emotional difficulties, developmental delay, or the effects of aging.
The goal of the Occupational Therapist is to assist each individual to maximize personal productivity, as
well as overall function, work, recreation, and self-care.
How do Occupational Therapists work?
Occupational Therapists take a holistic approach to the needs of their patients. Treatment usually involves
three stages of care:
Examination: The abilities of the patient are assessed in the context of work, school, home, play, leisure, general
lifestyle and family situation.
Consultation: The Occupational Therapist talks with the patient, other professionals and family members
developing a treatment program.
Treatment: The therapy takes place in our clinic. The goal is to maximize
the patient’s daily life skills.
When Should I have Occupational Therapy?
If you or a family member is experiencing loss of function or weakness, occupational therapy may be indicated. Your
physician will help you to make this determination and will write a referral for therapy. Occupational therapy is
often recommended as the primary form of conservative treatment and may be prescribed in combination with medication.
Early OT intervention can lessen the likelihood that the condition will become chronic.
It can also prevent further impairment & generalized de-conditioning as a result of disuse as well as help you
to avoid surgery. OT is also prescribed post- operatively to assist in recovery from surgery and help patients
to achieve full function.

How Do I Begin Therapy?
Please call our office to make arrangements to begin therapy. You may first see your physician for a referral so
that your insurance company covers the cost of the therapy received in our clinic.
What will I Experience at Jersey Central Physical Therapy and Fitness?
You will be greeted warmly when arriving for therapy and find yourself in a professional yet relaxed environment.
After completing some initial paperwork and changing your clothing, you will be introduced to your therapist. Plan
your first therapy visit to last for approximately 90 minutes in order to complete a thorough examination.
Your therapist will take your medical history and may assess your posture/alignment, range of motion, dexterity, hand
function, sensation, gait, acitivites of daily living, cognition, muscle strength & flexibility as well as the status
of the involved body part(s). You should expect to learn more about your condition and the plan for your treatment in
addition to discussing your goals for recovery.
Treatment should begin immediately and will incorporate hands-on-work (such as soft tissue/joint mobilization, range
of motion & stretching, and strengthening, custom splinting, edema control, sensory integration) with a guided program
of therapeutic exercise. Modalities (such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, fluidotherapy, whirlpool, ice or heat)
may also be used as an adjunct to your treatment; they should never be the focus of your care. Treatment is not complete
unless you are instructed in a home exercise program to supplement your work in therapy.
An individualized, functional and goal oriented therapy program is then devised to address your specific needs. This
program will evolve as your condition progresses.
What will therapy cost?
Although insurance companies offer a spectrum of plan options, most health insurance policies cover the
majority of the costs of physical therapy. The staff at our office will contact your insurance company
to verify your benefits. We will then inform you of any out-of-pocket expenses that you will incur (deductible
and/or co-payments).
If you subscribe to a managed care plan with no out-of-network benefits, consult with your directory of
preferred providers or the therapy office you've selected to determine if they are in network, or request your
physician for an out of network referal.
If you have the option to seek care out-of-network, you are not limited to a list of participating providers
and can see the therapists of your choice.
When will Occupational Therapy end?
Discharge from Occupational Therapy will take place when your therapists and physician have determined that you have
achieved maximum benefit from the treatment. Your insurance company may also influence the frequency and duration of
treatment, as they may dictate an approved number of visits for which they will reimburse.
You should continue to perform your home exercise program after discharge from OT. It will extend the benefits of your
therapy, help you to continue to progress and prevent re-injury. Your medical team will outline a plan for gradual return
to your pre-injury activities.
At time of discharge, we typically recommend our patients to join our MAX-FIT Programs to continue their cardiofitness
programs. We have found that the continued programs improve the quality of life for our clients reducing their need for
follow up care. Please refer to our MAX-FIT Programs.
